Aluminum foil tape roll with rubber adhesive

Every Type of Foil Tape and What It's Actually Used For

Foil tape looks simple. It is a metal backing with adhesive on one side. In practice, foil tape is not one product. Aluminum, copper, lead, scrim kraft, and butyl foil tapes do very different jobs, and picking the wrong one is how a seal fails, a shield leaks, or a duct joint comes loose.

This guide covers every major type of foil tape we carry at Tape Providers, what it is actually used for, and how to choose the right one for your job. All specs below come from the product pages, which note that specs are manufacturer specs and are not independently tested.

What Makes Foil Tape Different

Unlike cloth, vinyl, or plastic tape, foil tape uses a thin metal backing that conforms to curves, corners, and irregular surfaces. That metal layer helps with:

  • Heat reflection and heat dissipation
  • Moisture and vapor barrier sealing
  • Sealing metal, foil-faced insulation, and duct joints
  • Shielding and grounding in electronics work
  • Masking in high-heat or chemical processes

The backing is only half the story. The adhesive decides how fast it grabs, how long it lasts, and how much heat it can handle. That is why two aluminum foil tapes with the same width can behave very differently.

1. Aluminum Foil Tape with Rubber Adhesive: AFT-R

Aluminum Foil Tape with Rubber Adhesive AFT-R, 2.8 to 3.6 Mil, 50 yards is the fast-grab workhorse for HVAC and general sealing.

It uses a high-tack synthetic rubber adhesive on a removable paper liner. Peel adhesion is 91 oz per inch, with tensile strength from 10.3 lbs per inch at 2.8 mil up to 15.2 lbs per inch at 3.6 mil. Service temperature is -22 F to 176 F.

Use AFT-R for:

  • Sealing hot and cold air ducts
  • Vapor barrier sealing
  • Insulation joints and aluminum or plastic seams
  • Metal patching and waterproof sealing
  • Heat reflection on pipes and surfaces

Choose rubber adhesive when you need fast grab and strong initial tack, especially for duct work and insulation.

2. Aluminum Foil Tape with Acrylic Adhesive: AFT-A

Aluminum Foil Tape with Acrylic Adhesive AFT-A, 2.8 to 7.0 Mil is the long-term option when heat and aging matter more than instant grab.

It uses a solvent-based acrylic adhesive. Peel adhesion is 73 oz per inch, with tensile strength from 10.3 lbs per inch at 2.8 mil up to 18.1 lbs per inch at 7.0 mil. Service temperature is -22 F to 302 F, with the thicker 5.0 and 7.0 mil versions performing especially well at higher heat.

Use AFT-A for:

  • Long-term duct sealing in hot environments
  • Vapor barrier and waterproofing that must last
  • Heavy-duty sealing, aerospace, and high-strength joints
  • Masking for paint stripping and electroplating
  • Heat dissipation in high-temperature areas

Choose acrylic adhesive when the joint will see heat, sun, or long service life. Choose rubber when you need maximum initial tack.

3. Aluminum Foil Tape Without Liner: AFT-SW

Aluminum Foil Tape No Liner, Acrylic Adhesive AFT-SW, 3.6 or 4.8 Mil, 60 yards skips the paper liner.

Without a liner to peel, you can tear, wrap, and press faster. That helps on long duct runs, repetitive sealing, and jobs where you are working with gloves or on a ladder. The acrylic adhesive gives you the same long-term, heat-resistant bond as the AFT-A family.

Use no-liner foil tape when speed and simplicity matter and you do not need the liner for precise placement.

4. Aluminum Scrim Kraft Foil Tape: AFSKT

Aluminum Scrim Kraft Foil Tape AFSKT, 4.8 Mil, 50 yards is reinforced. It combines dead soft aluminum foil, fiberglass scrim, and kraft paper with an acrylic adhesive.

The scrim makes it stronger and more tear resistant. Tensile strength is 28 lbs per inch, adhesion is 73 oz per inch, and service temperature is -22 F to 176 F. The foil still conforms to curved and irregular surfaces, so you get a strong bond on duct board and insulation.

Use AFSKT for:

  • Sealing joints and seams on fiberglass duct board with an aluminum face
  • Foil-faced or foil-reinforced duct insulation
  • Closure systems for mineral wool or fiberglass insulation with foil facing
  • Rigid ducts and vapor barrier sealing

5. Matte Black Aluminum Foil Tape: AFTB20A

Matte Black Aluminum Foil Tape AFTB20A, 2 Mil, 27 yards solves a specific problem: reflection.

Standard foil is shiny. On stage, on camera, or around lighting and AV gear, that shine shows up. The matte black finish is non-reflective, so it hides seams, patches, and cable runs without glare, while still giving you a conformable foil backing.

Use matte black foil tape for stage, studio, event, and display work where you need foil performance without a silver flash.

6. Copper Foil Tape: CFT5A

Copper Foil Tape CFT5A, 36 yards is not for ducts. It is for electronics.

Copper foil offers exceptional conformity and solderability, which makes it ideal for EMI and RFI shielding. It is also used for repair, modification, prototyping, and flat conductor assemblies. If you need to shield a compartment, ground a seam, or prototype a circuit, copper foil is the right metal.

Use copper foil tape for:

  • EMI and RFI shielding
  • Grounding and conductive seams
  • Electronics repair and prototyping
  • Flat conductor assemblies

7. Lead Foil Tape: LFT5A

Lead Foil Tape LFT5A, 36 yards, Made in USA is 100 percent pure lead foil, highly malleable, with an aggressive acrylic adhesive.

Lead shapes to intricate patterns and stays put. Thickness is 6 mils, adhesion is 35 oz per inch, tensile strength is 18 lbs per inch, and service temperature is -30 F to 275 F. It meets Fed. Spec. HH-T-0029, Amendment 2, per the product page.

Use lead foil tape for:

  • Sealing double-paned windows and decorative leaded windows
  • Radiation barrier and x-ray shielding
  • Masking x-ray plates, electroplating, and chemical milling
  • Vapor barrier and masking work where conformability matters

Lead tape is a specialty product. Handle it per your facility safety rules and keep it away from food-contact uses.

8. Butyl Foil Tape

Butyl foil tape pairs a foil facing with a butyl adhesive for waterproof sealing. It is the choice when you need a thick, sticky seal that stays flexible and blocks water, often on roofing, flashing, and outdoor seams.

For this category, see Shurtape SF 685 ShurMASTIC Butyl Foil Tape and Shurtape SF 686 UL 181B-FX Listed Printed ShurMASTIC Butyl Foil Tape. Check the product page for the exact listing, sizes, and specs before you order, since butyl options vary by application.

Application Tips That Make Foil Tape Last

  • Clean the surface first. Dust, oil, and moisture are the most common reasons a foil seal fails.
  • Press firmly along the full length. Foil needs full contact, especially on curves and seams.
  • Overlap seams by at least 1 inch on duct and vapor barrier work, and press the overlap well.
  • Match the adhesive to the temperature. Rubber for fast grab, acrylic for heat and long life.
  • Store rolls in a cool, dry place and keep the liner on until you apply.
