3M Is Phasing Out Its PTFE Tapes in 2026: What to Use Instead

If your plant runs on 3M PTFE tape, this is the year to make a plan. 3M is phasing out its PTFE tape lines in 2026, including the glass cloth tapes (5151, 5153, and the 5451 family), the skived film tapes (5480, 5481, 5498), the extruded film tapes (5490, 5491), and the 60 Series. The tape on your machines still works fine. The risk is not performance, it is supply: when your current stock runs out, reordering the same part number may not be an option.

The good news is that PTFE tape is bought by construction, not by logo. If you match the backing, the thickness, and the adhesive, a replacement tape does the same job on the same machine. This guide maps the main 3M PTFE lines to the closest Tape Providers equivalents we stock, and it is honest about the two cases where there is no true match.

What Is Actually Changing

The phase-out covers the PTFE tapes many plants treat as permanent fixtures:

  • PTFE glass cloth tapes: 5151, 5151PL, 5153, 5153L, 5451, 5453, used on heat sealing bars, vacuum sealers, and electrical insulation
  • Skived PTFE film tapes: 5480, 5481, 5498, used for electrical wraps, release surfaces, and low-friction mechanical applications
  • Extruded PTFE film tapes: 5490, 5491, used where the film runs at higher speeds
  • 60 Series tapes: 60, 61, 62, 63

The smart move is to qualify a replacement while you still have stock of the original. Test on one machine, confirm the fit, and then switch the rest of the plant on your schedule instead of during a stockout.

The Cross-Reference: What to Use Instead

This table is based on construction and thickness, which is how PTFE tape should be matched. Specs quoted below come from our product pages, which note they are manufacturer specs and are not tested for accuracy.

5151, 5151PL, 5153, 5153L, 5451, 5453 PTFE glass cloth TFE28 (5 mil), TFE46 (6.8 mil), TFE54 (8.4 mil), TFE91 (12.1 mil) Pick by the thickness you run now. Same construction: PTFE-coated fiberglass cloth with silicone adhesive.
5480 Skived PTFE film, 2 mil SPTFE2HD (2 mil) High-density tensilized film for electrical wraps, coil separators, and slot liners.
5481 Skived PTFE film, 5 mil SPTFE5 (5 mil) General mechanical and heat sealing use, heat sealing bars and jaws.

Why These Replacements Work

Glass cloth for glass cloth

Our TFE28, TFE46, TFE54, and TFE91 are woven fiberglass cloth impregnated with PTFE and coated with high-temperature silicone adhesive, the same construction as the 3M glass cloth line. All four run from -100°F to 500°F on 36-yard rolls, and they come with a liner, self wound, or without adhesive. Thickness runs from 5 mil (TFE28, 43 oz/in adhesion) up to 12.1 mil (TFE91, 60 oz/in adhesion and 290 lb/in warp breaking strength) for heavy wear jobs like gaskets and roll covers.

Skived film for skived film

Our SPTFE2HD, SPTFE5, and SPTFE10 are pure skived PTFE film with silicone adhesive, self wound, also rated -100°F to 500°F. The 2 mil SPTFE2HD is a high-density tensilized film built for electrical work (harness and coil wraps, transformers, slot liners, 147% elongation, UL 510A). The 5 and 10 mil grades stretch further (200% and 300% elongation) and conform to curves, jaws, and rollers in mechanical service.

How to Switch in 4 Steps

  1. Identify what you run now. Note the backing (glass cloth or skived film), the thickness, the width, and whether it has a liner. The part number alone does not tell the whole story.
  2. Match construction first, thickness second. Glass cloth replaces glass cloth, skived replaces skived. Then pick the closest thickness from the table above.
  3. Test on one machine. Request a free sample and run it on a single sealer, wrap, or liner before you change the plant standard.
  4. Stock the switch. Once the test passes, order working stock of the replacement so the change happens on your schedule. Multi-line plants can use full pallet ordering to keep cost per roll down.

Where There Is No Match, We Say So

Two cases do not have a true equivalent in our line. Extruded film tapes 5490 and 5491 behave differently at speed, and skived film only covers the low-speed end of that work. The 60 Series has no direct replacement here either. If either is your case, contact us with the application details and we will tell you plainly what can and cannot be covered, rather than sell you a tape that almost fits.

Try It First: Request a Free Sample

The safest way to switch tapes is to run the replacement on your own equipment first. Request a free sample of the TFE or SPTFE grade you are considering.

Go to Request A FREE Sample, enter the SKU of the product you want to test, add it to cart, and check out. Samples are free, but shipping is not included. Samples are for testing purposes, up to 4 inches wide and about 10 to 15 feet long.

Final Thoughts

A phase-out is only a problem if it catches you with an empty shelf. Match your current tape by construction and thickness, test the replacement on one machine, and stock the switch while you still have time. For most 3M glass cloth and skived PTFE users, the equivalent tape is already on our shelf.

If you are unsure which replacement fits your machine, our team can help you pick the right option.
